A Photographer’s Dream
Whether you’re an experienced photographer or a keen beginner, Boulder Island is sure to spark your creative passion. With its sculptural rock formations, hidden coves, vistas with panoramic views, and vibrant marine life, every spot offers a new photo opportunity waiting to be captured.
During unusually low tides, explore the exposed reef flats and coral heads to photograph the intricate micro-world usually hidden beneath the ocean. Catch close-up shots of camouflaged crabs and vibrant anemones that live in the tidal pools.
By the shoreline, aim your camera at shorebirds like herons as they hunt in the shallows. Take on the challenge of snapping the graceful white-bellied sea eagles and Brahminy kites as they glide a few metres above your head, their broad wings spread as they scout the beaches and coastline for prey.
As the sun sets, find the ideal angle to photograph Boulder Island’s iconic boulder-strewn beaches, bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun reflecting off the serene waters. This compact island paradise offers a wealth of photographic inspiration.
Explore Untouched Beaches
Picture expanses of soft white sand kissed by crystal-clear turquoise waters—Boulder Island’s beaches are truly natural works of art. Wiggle your toes in the smooth sand, or set up your hammock between the swaying beachside trees for a peaceful day of pure relaxation with no one else around.
With inviting names like Eagle, Boulder, Bamboo, Sisters, Moken, Pebble, Cliff, and Fossil Beach, choosing the perfect beach can be a delightful challenge! Beauty is a matter of personal taste, and each beach has its own unique appeal. My personal favorite is Bamboo Beach, followed closely by Moken Beach and Sisters Beach.

Snorkel the Shallow Reefs
Snorkel vibrant waters filled with stunning coral gardens and an array of marine life. Explore the hidden treasures beneath the surface as you float effortlessly with the gentle currents. Swim alongside inquisitive reef sharks and marvel at a rainbow of tropical fish darting among the colorful coral formations.
With every breath, you’ll uncover a new and fascinating aspect of this dynamic aquatic ecosystem. The reefs here remain largely unexplored and untouched, thanks to the isolated nature of this small island. The resort provides snorkelling gear for guests to use at no additional cost.
Scuba Dive the Underwater Wonderlands
If you’re a certified diver, join the resort’s skilled in-house dive instructor for exhilarating deep-water adventures. If you’re not certified, the instructor offers a unique Discover Scuba Diving course, providing a safe and limited introduction to the depths of the ocean.
Explore multiple dive sites around Boulder Island and nearby locations, where you can encounter some of the Andaman Sea’s most intriguing marine life and stunning underwater scenery. Experience a vibrant array of colorful coral reefs, exotic fish, and other fascinating sea creatures. The resort rents scuba gear and provides diving guidance for an additional fee; ask about the rates and availability at the resort.

Explore the microlife among the exposed corals during low tides
The exceptional low tides on the island reveal an entire hidden universe teeming with life. As the sea retreats, exposing the shallow reefs and corals, an amazing opportunity arises to discover the intricate world of marine creatures that typically remain out of sight. During these rare low tides, carefully venture out onto the reef flats and prepare to be amazed.
Peer closely at the exposed coral heads and you’ll find a mesmerizing display of vibrant colors and fascinating textures created by the thousands of tiny beings that call this environment home. Minuscule shrimp, delicate feathery worms, and camouflaged crabs scurry about, going about their business in this temporary coastal playground. I recently spotted a baby lionfish just 4 inches long in one of the small tidal pools. He warned me not to touch!
Take a moment to simply observe, and you may be rewarded with witnessing fascinating behaviours. These include the lightning-fast strike of a minute predator catching its prey, the hypnotic sway of filter feeders capturing passing nutrients, or the artful excavation efforts of the industrious micro-engineers reshaping the reef. This ever-changing landscape harbours endless surprises for those willing to spend time crouched down, almost eye-level with an entire cosmos contained within each newly-exposed coral head.
Avoid damaging the corals and leave the rocks in place. Even the smallest touch can harm the fragile coral reefs. Let’s admire them without disruption.

Birdwatching
For those who love birdwatching, Boulder Island is a paradise filled with feathers. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars. This rugged, untouched island hosts a wide variety of bird species, offering a fantastic opportunity for spotting unique birds. Look for white-bellied sea eagles, Brahminy kites, and the gorgeous Nicobar pigeons. The cheerful white-rumped shama will almost certainly wake you up early with its melodious songs. Some other birds I have personally observed here include the Pacific reef-heron, white-bellied sea-eagle, common kingfisher, Nicobar pigeon, white-breasted waterhen, gray heron, Asian emerald dove, and the Chinese egret. Many more species call this island home.

Hike the Trails and Discover the Island’s Biodiversity
Boulder Island is part of the Myeik Archipelago, a region renowned for its rich biodiversity and distinctive ecosystems. Set out on a guided or self-guided trek along several well-marked trails through the island’s lush interior, where a vibrant tapestry of tropical flora and fauna unfolds. Keep an eye out for exotic birds in the treetops, and relish in the island’s diverse ecosystem as you explore this secluded haven. The jungles are home to harmless monitor lizards and reticulated pythons, but no dangerous animals or insects have been found, making it entirely safe to explore both the jungle and the beaches.
Conquer the Boulders
True to its name, Boulder Island boasts an array of massive granite boulders scattered across its terrain. Challenge yourself by scaling these natural monoliths, carefully navigating their rugged surfaces until you reach the summit where panoramic vistas of the island’s forests and beaches await, painting a breathtaking reward for your efforts. Note that scaling these boulders is a risky activity, requiring a high level of physical fitness and experience. Be fully aware that you are doing so at your own risk and be reminded that medical care is a long distance away and an emergency rescue can be very costly. Please refrain from moving or toppling any of the boulders, even if you have the super ability to do so.

Please note that additional charges apply for these cooking classes. No matter which dish you create or enjoy, every bite will be enhanced by the spectacular beachfront setting. My personal favourite is the traditional Burmese tea leaf salad, locally called lahpet thoke.

There’s nothing quite like the exhilaration of sea kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding around a remote island, where the only sounds are the lapping waves and the distant calls of seabirds. Paddle along the island’s coastline in a kayak, gliding through crystal-clear waters as you take in the sight of towering boulders and hidden coves. Experience the tranquility of the ocean and the awe-inspiring beauty of nature from a distinctive perspective. The resort provides kayaks and paddleboards for guests to use at no cost. Please note that paddleboarding is only permitted in a designated area of Boulder Bay to protect the fragile corals, which can also pose a risk of injury to paddleboarders.

Join or Watch a Game of Burmese Chinlone
As the day winds down on Boulder Island, guests are invited to join the local resort staff for a lively game of Chinlone, the captivating traditional sport of Myanmar. Chinlone, or cane ball, is a unique blend of sports and dance that has co-existed with the locals for a long time. In this entertaining and fluid game, a four-inch cane ball is tossed and kicked around by players in a circle, showcasing their agility, coordination, and grace. Watch in awe as the local staff effortlessly keep the ball aloft, using a mesmerizing combination of kicks, headbutts, and gentle strikes to create a mesmerizing dance-like performance. Eco-Warriors Unite
Despite its remote location, the island’s beaches receive a fair amount of garbage from distant sources due to ocean currents and winds, especially during the monsoon season. This beautiful island invites you to help preserve its natural splendour. Become an eco-warrior by participating in beach cleanups. Make your mark by removing ocean-borne plastics during an invigorating morning stroll on the beach. Removing ocean-borne plastics not only enhances the island’s aesthetics but also prevents harmful debris from entering the marine ecosystem, safeguarding the diverse marine life that surrounds Boulder Island.
Meet the Moken People and Experience their Culture
Also known as Sea Gypsies, the Moken people live in a few scattered villages across the Myeik Archipelago. While there are no villages on Boulder Island, enquire with the resort about a possible visit to a village on a nearby island to learn about their centuries-old traditions, beliefs, and deep connection with the ocean. If you choose a multi-day cruise on the Sea Gipsy boat, you most likely will visit a Moken village.
