A) ABOUT THE MYEIK ARCHIPELAGO, BOULDER ISLAND, AND THE BOULDER BAY ECO RESORT
1) What is the Myeik Archipelago?
The Myeik Archipelago (also known as the Mergui Archipelago), is located in the Andaman Sea, west of Thailand and southern Myanmar. It consists of over 800 islands, known for their limestone and granite formations, dense tropical jungles, and extensive and unexplored coral reefs. The archipelago is little developed and is know for its pristine islands, white beaches, and undisturbed wildlife and corals reefs.
2) Where is Boulder Island located?
Boulder Island is located in the westernmost part of the Myeik Archipelago, about 85 kilometres (53 miles) west of both mainland Myanmar and Thailand. It is situated 43 nautical miles northwest of Kawthaung, at the southernmost tip of Myanmar.
3) What makes Boulder Island unique?
Boulder Island has a distinctive landscape with gigantic rounded boulders scattered across its shores and interior, some forming gravity-defying formations. It’s a remote and pristine island with lush jungles, hidden coves, and eight pristine beaches. The island’s isolation and minimal development, free from mass tourism, have helped preserve its clear turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs, making it a haven for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts. The island is also a nesting area for many birds such as white-bellied sea eagles and Brahminy kites.
4) What accommodation is available on Boulder Island?
Boulder Bay Eco Resort is the sole accommodation on Boulder Island. This eco-friendly resort offers various bungalows, some located on the beachfront and others nestled among the shady trees. There is one large suite bungalow and several standard and superior bungalows built in the traditional Burmese style using renewable materials like wood and palm leaves designed to integrate sustainably with the island’s ecology. The resort is entirely powered by solar energy.
5) Who owns the Boulder Bay Eco Resort?
The resort is privately owned by a Burmese entity and a Norwegian entrepreneur with extensive experience in Myanmar and Southeast Asia. Driven by his love for the region, his vision for sustainable tourism, and his commitment to protecting this beautiful part of the world, he established the resort to promote eco-friendly practices and to act as a guardian of this unique and pristine island.
6) How can I book my stay at Boulder Bay Eco Resort?
You can book your stay at the resort by writing to [email protected] or by visiting boulderasia.com which contains detailed information and offers. You can inquire about combo packages that include a stay on Boulder Island and a multi-day cruise among the islands. 7) What is the MV Sea Gipsy?
The MV Sea Gipsy is a custom-designed, Burmese-style junk boat, ideal for those interested in experiencing a multi-day sea safari, snorkeling excursions, adventure trips, or romantic overnight trips. This tastefully decorated vessel features five comfortable open-air gazebo areas located on the main and upper decks. B) VISAS AND GETTING TO BOULDER ISLAND
1) Do I need a visa to visit Boulder Island?
Unless you are from Thailand or a few other selected countries, you will need a Myanmar visa. Even most ASEAN passport holders need a visa, so please carefully check the latest requirements on the Myanmar government website. An eVisa can be fairly easily obtained from this website at https://evisa.moip.gov.mm. Alternatively, get a visa stamped in your passport at your local Myanmar consulate/embassy, or the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok. Visa requirements may change, so check for the latest information when applying. At time of booking you may also ask the resort about any assistance it can provide you, and to clarify the visa requirements and process of obtaining a visa. Processing normally takes 3 to 4 working days and costs about US$50. The current cost at the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok is 1600 Thai baht and takes three working days.
2) How do I get to Boulder Island?
The resort’s boat leaves from the pier at Kawthaung (pronounced Cowtong), Myanmar’s southernmost town. Get here by flight from Yangon in Myanmar (which could be tricky to book and expensive), or via Ranong in Thailand. The Ranong option is by far the best. Get to Ranong by air from Bangkok or by VIP bus—take the pleasant overnight bus from Sai Tai Mai Bus Station (Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal). The bus ticket costs about 700 baht and departs around 7pm. Alternatively, arrive by private or public transport from the south, such as Phuket. The resort organises transfers from Ranong hotels and the Ranong Airport or bus terminal, which are included in the package. As it can be more challenging for foreign guests to handle immigration procedures, starting in Ranong is highly recommended. On the departure day, the resort’s guide will arrange the transfer from Ranong and escort guests to Kawthaung to make your stay at the resort from the beginning as smooth as possible. If needed, stay over one night in Ranong. Accommodation is plentiful. If you prefer to arrive in Kawthaung on your own, then after going through Thai immigration, take a 20 min longtail boat (300 baht) to Kawthaung. The resort’s boat usually leaves after 10 AM from a pier in Kawthaung and the pleasant journey to Boulder Island passes many islands and idyllic beaches that takes about 5.5 hours during which time you will be served food and drinks. Relax on the deck and enjoy the tranquil scenery!
Also, if you prefer to arrive earlier to explore Kawthaung, then recommended accommodation is the newly renovated Honey Bear Hotel close to the pier. Kawthaung is safe, and quite interesting if you are a first-time visitor. Lots of photo opportunities as the friendly locals enjoy posing for photos.
3) Is there a faster way to get to Boulder Island?
On request, and at an additional fee, a speedboat (if available) can be arranged from Kawthaung to Boulder Island. The journey takes about two hours. Enquire at time of booking.

G) PRACTICALITIES: TIME TO VISIT, PACKING, COSTS, CONNECTIVITY ETC.
1) When is the best time to visit?
This region experiences heavy rainfall during monsoon season, which spans from late May to mid-October, with June to September being the wettest and windiest months. During this period, the seas can become too rough for boating. The resort operates from early October to the end of April but closes during the monsoon season. For precise opening and closing dates, it’s best to contact the resort directly. The optimal weather occurs between January and March, although the shoulder months can also be quite pleasant.
2) What do I need to bring for a trip to Boulder Island?
Here are some recommended items to pack and please try to use only environmentally friendly packaging. Consider bringing anything you may need as there are no shops on the island.
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- Eco-friendly insect repellent
- Hand sanitizer and wet wipes
- First-aid kit
- Reusable water bottle
- Medications
- Swimwear
- Hat and sunglasses
- Sandals or flip-flops suitable for hiking, as well as comfortable walking shoes
- Rubber swim shoes are essential for protecting your feet from sharp objects in the water or on the beach. While corals and small rocks in shallow water can cause discomfort, there is also the rare possibility of stepping on broken glass bottle or a rusted nail in a piece of discarded wood. This can happen on any beach around the world. To ensure your safety, please wear foot protection such as rubber swim shoes on the beach and in shallow waters. However, be cautious not to step on fragile, healthy growing corals. These corals take many years to develop their beauty and can break easily. Let’s protect them by stepping carefully around them or, even better, swimming around them rather than walking!
- A few books to read either in paper or electronically.
3) What expenses are typically covered in the resort package?
Most of your expenses, including meals and basic activities, are included in your package. However, scuba diving, cooking classes (if available) and other activities may incur extra charges. Check with the resort for specific details.
4) How can I pay for my expenses once I am in Myanmar?
While the Myanmar Kyat is the official currency, US dollars and the Thai baht are both accepted at the resort. The Thai baht is also accepted in Kawthaung. Major international credit cards are rarely accepted in Myanmar due to sanctions. You can also arrange to pay via the resort’s bank account. Check with the resort for specific payment methods.
5) Are there ATMs or shops on Boulder Island?
There are no ATMs or shops on Boulder Island. While you won’t need much cash, it is advisable to carry some for alcoholic and soft drinks, diving, as well as optional tips to staff.
6) Is there internet or a phone signal on Boulder Island?
The resort provides free satellite Wi-Fi in the common areas, but there is no phone signal on the island, offering a digital detox experience. Note that the satellite signal is sometimes quite weak.

The islands are mostly inhabited by the Burmese and Moken people. The Burmese, mostly fishermen and their families, are generally friendly and hospitable. They are known for their deep connection to the ocean, traditional sea-dwelling lifestyle, and their practice of fishing and boat-building.
2) Can I interact with the Moken people?
While there are no Moken villages on Boulder Island, if you opt for a multi-day cruise on the MV Sea Gipsy you will most likely have the opportunity to visit these people in their tiny villages.
